Jeffrey Epstein's last mugshot from July 2019 |
Who was Jeffrey Epstein?
Convicted in 2008 by a Florida state court of procuring an underage girl for prostitution and of soliciting a prostitute, Epstein served almost 13 months in custody, though still with extensive work release. He was convicted of only these two crimes as part of a plea deal while federal officials identified 36 girls, some as young as 14 years old, whom Epstein had allegedly sexually abused.
A very bizarre suicide case
Years after, Epstein was arrested again for one final time on July 6, 2019, on federal charges for the sex trafficking of minors in Florida and New York and died in his jail cell on August 10, 2019. The medical examiner ruled the death a suicide. ..but
Things don't quite add up. Why would he kill himself as he had more than enough money and resources to keep fighting for many more years to come, not to mention his many high profile connections in the political world. Epstein's lawyers have disputed the ruling, and there has been extensive public skepticism about the true cause of his death. Since his death precluded the possibility of pursuing criminal charges, a judge dismissed all criminal charges on August 29, 2019.
There seem to be major plot-holes in the Epstein killed himself direction. For starters, on July 23, 2019, three weeks prior to his death, he was found unconscious in his jail cell with injuries to his neck and claimed that he was attacked by his cellmate, who was awaiting trial for four counts of murder, but the correctional officer deemed it as an attempted suicide. After the incident, he was placed on a suicide watch for six days. Later on July 29, he was taken off suicide watch and placed in a special housing unit with another inmate and close associates said he was in "good spirits". When placed in the special housing unit, the jail informed the Justice Department that he would have a cellmate, and that a guard would look into the cell every 30 minutes. But the procedures were again strangely ignored on the night of his death. On August 9, his cellmate was transferred out, but no one took his place. And later in the evening, in violation of the jail's normal procedure, he was not checked upon on that 30 minutes routine. The two guards who were assigned to check his jail unit that night fell asleep and did not check on him for about three hours and instead falsified the related records. And the two cameras in front of his cell also malfunctioned that same night.
Epstein was almost comically placed with a former N.Y. police officer Nicholas Tartaglione. |
